Choosing a TV Unit, tougher than you think…

You’d be forgiven for thinking that, after you’ve chosen your television and brought it home, the hard part is over, however, you’ve just entered a whole other series of decisions.

Firstly, are you going to choose a wall Mount or a tv stand. If you’re renting, not likely to leave the tv in the same space forever, and not overly fond of craning your neck, the chances are you’ll opt for the tv stand.

However, the journey doesn’t stop here, where is the tv going? The first thing to sort out is to actually measure your Television, and measure the size of the stand it sits on.

The tv unit you end up with needs to not only suit the tv, but actually be the right size so you don’t experience any awkward accidents. This means the stand should always be wider than the television.

Once you’ve got the measurements sorted, you have to decide where the focus of your room is going to be, are we putting the tv along a wall, and creating a crescent, or sticking it in the corner and angling the room into that point. Is your tv big enough to command a wall space, or is it more suited to a corner unit.

Even if you try to avoid doing so, wherever your tv ends up, usually is where the focus of the room goes, so as much as we doing think so, we spend an awful long time staring at the tv/media unit we end up with.

What do we need to store with our tv? Lots of hardware, consoles and electronics, we are going to need a lot of space below, take stock of your needs and leave a little space for potential future proofing. Drawers are handy for tucking away controllers and any extra cabling.

Now, do we go for low, or high? That depends on the seating you have, it’s vital you visualise your current set up and think about what’s the most comfortable angle for you. A low unit allows you to really take ownership of the wall space around the tv, and take some of the focus back to your style.

Whilst the taller units allow for a lot more storage space, and suit more traditional sofas with upright seating.
