Light or Dark Furniture

One of the toughest decisions to make when choosing furniture is, whether to go for dark or light as a theme. Both have their own benefits and qualities, and both definitely change the whole feel of a room.

When we buy furniture we aren’t looking for a temporary item, it’s not seasonal, like cushions or the walls, or throws, these things are the cake toppers, beyond the icing, they accent a room, they’re easily changed, but they don’t provide the rooms soul.

You’d be forgiven for thinking a room is anchored by the colours of the wall, but this leads to being trapped by a theme you could easily change, but you end up buying furniture to suit the contents of a couple of tins of paint, and this does not allow for flexibility.

No, the safest way to anchor your room is to decide whether the main theme of the furniture is going to be dark or light, from there, you can layer the room accordingly.

It’s often thought that a light, to honey wood level room creates a warm, bright environment, whilst darker woods give a more formal, more dramatic feel. However this is only if you follow the theme with all your items.

The anchor should reflect the natural light to a room, if it’s a really dark room, there’s no sense layering dark furniture, it creates a void of space and a very dark environment to live in. Conversely, if the room is surrounded by glass and receives a lot of light, you don’t need to worry about introducing darker tones, it’ll balance out.

Of course personal taste is the most important thing with interior design, whether or not a school of design approves, if you like it! Go for it!

But some things are good to take note of to get the most out of your room, helping to maximise the space, both physically and subconsciously.

So whilst light furniture is a fantastic way to open up space, and bring a summer like freshness into the home, when used right, paring a darker compliment of furniture with a room can not only enrich the status of a room, but add some serious definition to the character.

It’s a choice that keeps many of us thinking, but we would strongly advice taking both into consideration, after all once the foundations of your room are right, you can go through countless combinations of the soft furnishings of a room to accent your style.
