The living room is precisely that, it’s the room we spend most of our waking time at home in, it’s the communal hub of the home, the place designed to cater to all those who dwell in our homes.

Firstly we need to look at our arrangement, it’s important to note that over the last century our living room has become more of an entertainment room in its own right, rather than the drawing room we literally, withdraw from, when we are finished in the dining room, once the entertainment hub of the family home.

These days our living rooms tend to arrange themselves around a television, the communal activity of choice, however it’s also a place we lounge, talk and partake in other activities, so it’s important it can accommodate multiple uses.

Firstly a media unit has to be chosen, whether a small functional tv stand, or an imposing media unit, which cba house a multitude of entertainment devices.

Occasional tables are a great room opener...

It’s important to consider its position, whether it’ll be set in the corner, or commanding a stretch of wall. There’s no right or wrong answer, only what’s right for you.

After deciding how much seating is required, and where to position it we need to consider the supporting cast to any sofa, the accompaniment to all settees. I am of course talking about the contingent of coffee tables and occasional tables.

When it comes to coffee tables, you can have imposing chests, or multi draw, storage masters. Or you can opt for slender Scandinavian designs, delicately placed in the middle of your living room.

Then the side tables, these can be end tables, partnered with each arm of a sofa, or nests, quietly waiting to spread out and provide assistance wherever they’re needed.

Sometimes we need a bit more storage...

Then we come to the wider supporting cast, the scenery, the pieces we give little thought to. However if they weren’t there would leave an incredible void in our living rooms. I am of course talking about bookcases and sideboards.

There’s a vast array of things that are tucked away in our living rooms. From books, possessions, family photos and more.

Everything has its place, everything has its home, and it’s important to ensure that we think best how to utilise the space available to you.
