Valentine’s Day can be a curse for both singles and couples alike. For singles, the day offers a glimmer of hope, the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak; but as the day progresses, you realise that the light you see is that of an incoming train. For couples, the day is meant to kind of reaffirm their love for each other but obviously, the pressure of expectations catches on. And once a precedent is set, the bar is set higher, and sustenance of enthusiasm clearly becomes an issue. Despite all this cynical rant, there’s nothing like travelling with your partner to ring in Valentine’s Day. It can bring you closer like never before and do wonders to your relationship, according to some studies. So here’s a list of five romantic destinations to choose from in India.
The capital of the northern-most state of Jammu and Kashmir is known for its scenic beauty. Nestled in the Kashmir valley on the banks of the Jhelum river against the backdrop of the beautiful Dal lake, Nigeen lake and the mighty Himalayas, this place is paradise. Thanks to the many water bodies here, it is often called ‘Venice Of The East’. The best way to experience Srinagar is to stay in a houseboat on Dal lake and go on shikara (wooden boat) rides with your loved one.
This sleepy little coastal town, lovingly called Alleppey, is located in the southern state of Kerala. With its network of canals, backwaters, lagoons and beaches, Alleppey is fast becoming a popular honeymoon destination. Aesthetically crafted luxury houseboats take you on a backwater trail amidst coconut and palm trees. Fresh seafood is a bonus. Besides the backwaters, you could take a walk down the endless tracts of paddy fields in Kuttanad in the vicinity. The closest airport is Cochin.
This quiet, clean little town in Madhya Pradesh is for history and architecture buffs, among others. The town is famous for its temple complexes featuring exquisite sculptures straight out of Kama Sutra and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just a few kilometres from the town, you could visit a national park (Panna National Park), look for crocodiles in the Ken river and explore some caves and waterfalls. Don’t miss the annual Khajuraho Dance Festival which happens in February.
Known as the ‘City Of Lakes’, Udaipur in the north-western state of Rajasthan is one of the most romantic places in the country. The main attraction here is the Pichola lake with the Lake Palace at its core (it’s now a five star resort) bound by the rolling hills of the Aravallis. The city has plenty of history and you can visit the city palace and museum, take a stroll down the gardens, shop in the local markets or simply chill in a restaurant by the lake.
This is one island you wouldn’t mind getting marooned in, especially with your loved one. Located some 57km off the capital, Port Blair, Havelock Island is part of Ritchie’s Archipelago, and boasts of picturesque beaches. The Radha Nagar beach here is widely acknowledged as one of the best beaches in Asia. Snorkelling in the crystal clear waters is a popular activity here.
So pull out your Satara dining table, set up a romantic candlelight dinner date with your loved one, and plan your next holiday together.
